Chapter Eleven

Abby was not sure how she felt about everything that had happened since Laurence left her room the day after he slept on her balcony. Unsure what to make of the profound difference in him other than to pray it was not what she had feared.

That he was going about another method of attack when it came to making her his wife.

Because if he were, it was terribly effective. From the moment he’d sat down on the settee next to her weeks ago and apologized to this very moment. Now she was in limbo, staring down at trousers and a tunic made to her size. To a challenge that she face her past and tackle a feat she had wanted to confront the night he’d come across her crying, only in a much safer way.

As it turned out, Laurence had been every bit as terrifying as she knew he would be for no other reason than how drawn to him she had become. How much she’d come to long for his company and conversation, craving the unexpected friendship that had blossomed between them in so little time. A comradery she feared trusting because of how swiftly it had arrived. How new it felt.

Yet, it felt profound, too.

Extraordinarily real.

More genuine than any connection she had ever felt because of how well it ebbed and flowed. He might have been a superior businessman and dauntingly good at what he set his mind to, yet these aspects of him had seemed absent during their numerous conversations. All she felt in those was her. How he looked at her. Engaged her. The way he spoke freely about things men had never talked to her about.

How he had made her feel relevant.

Better still, how he’d made her feel like she could, at long last, truly thrive outside of the walls Reginald had so mightily erected. And she could. Would. Had to. Reginald might have feared it, but she need not anymore. Or so she prayed because she wanted to trust Laurence.

Love in a way she had never been allowed.

In a fashion, she’d been taught to distrust.

She fingered the clothing left for her and felt a jolt of excitement at the possibility of freedom beyond her wildest imagination. So, not debating a moment longer, she dressed, finding it odd but not altogether unpleasant to slip into trousers that fit her quite nicely.

While determined to storm out and finally make a mighty leap off her freedom balcony, she did not rush out as quickly as she might have thought. Instead, she stopped and gazed around at her room. Even though she would be back, she looked at everything as she had numerous times before, caught in the shadow of caring for Reginald. Then her gaze drifted to the balcony door like it had every visit. And every time, she’d fantasized about opening that door and stepping onto a balcony from another time. Perhaps stepping into a time when a doting, loving husband waited for her.

Moreover, when she ended up in a life denied her.
